Geek Gallery #2
Tonight the family and I were sitting watching a program on The Discovery Channel about the discovery (go figure) of the largest Ichthyosaur fossil in the world. It was found in Pink Mountains of British Columbia. Ichthyosaurs lived in the prehistoric Mezozoic and Triassic periods and were in fact lizards who lived in the worlds oceans. They evolved amazing adaptations to survive in the water. One of these adaptations was size. The specimen found in the Pink Mountains was as large as semi-truck with trailer. Getting a fossil that size out of the dense forest of British Columbia was interesting to watch. As it turns out, most North American Ichthyosaurs have been found in Nevada. This brings me to the subject of the Geek Gallery.Nevada is crazy about Ichthyosaurs. It is the state fossil and they have numerous fossils on display in various museums. They also have a local brewery that makes a Ichthyosaur Pale Ale. This of course peaked my interest so I looked it up. Sure enough it's true. The Great Basin Brewing company located in Sparks Nevada brews it and evidently it's quite popular and has won some brewing contests.
So, if you happen to be in Sparks, Nevada (which is just outside Reno) stop by your local tavern and say:
"Gimme an Icky!"
